“Running water in the temporary kennel became an issue,” Brian says as he rushes to Kyle’s side. The polo and jeans he’s wearing until he changes for the ceremony are askew, and he’s red to his jaw line. “Sorry I kind of—ran off.”

“Is everything okay?” Kyle asks.

They walk to the lobby—Kyle has never seen such beautiful glass and stunning furniture and high ceilings. The cunning uses of space and the modern architecture take his breath away, and he wants to stop every few feet and stare. Brian’s hand cups his elbow.

“Jenn’s mother is having last-minute panic attacks over her shoes and whether she’s going to trip walking Jenn down the aisle,” Brian says. “The hospital’s dog mascot Monkey ate a wedding favor and they had to induce vomiting, Michael has almost caused two hotel employees to quit, one of his colleagues is concerned about the view of the river from the ballroom because his wife has a fear of bodies of water, and my father has yet to check in, so all things considered—well. I’m considering alcoholism. Your thoughts?”

Kyle steers Brian to the window. “Look at that view. And breathe.”

“It is gorgeous.” From where they’re standing, they can see the Chicago skyline on all three sides.

“Is Monkey going to be able to carry the ring, still?” Kyle asks.

“He seems fine now. We’ll just have one of the vet techs walk beside him to be safe. I know Jenn thought it was awesome that they were able to train him to walk down the aisle on his own, but…”

Kyle slides his arms around Brian’s waist. “Is there anything I can do?”

Brian breathes in and out. “You’re already doing it.”

Kyle presses his lips to Brian’s ear. “I think you’d be a terrible alcoholic.”

“I think I would be, too.”

“I want to stare at these floors forever,” Kyle whispers with a glance downward. “Have you seen these floors? Oh, my god.”

Brian laughs. “This place is amazing.” He pauses. “Oh, and I had one of the boys go to the dummy location we advertised in the paper, and sure enough, Turn Back has been protesting outside the building all morning.”

“Not surprised. It was a really good idea to place that ad.”

“I have no idea how long it’ll take them to figure out the wedding is taking place here, but if we’re lucky, it’ll be long enough to seat the guests, at least.”

Kyle is worried about that possibility, but there’s nothing they can do about it unless Turn Back breaks a peaceful assembly law.

“The organizer kicked me out of the kennel with strict orders to decompress and make myself beautiful, so shall we go upstairs?” Brian asks. He looks much more relaxed.

“You’re sure you don’t want to wait for your father and his wife?” Brian had said he wanted to intercept his dad before Michael had the chance to run into him first.

“Honestly? I need a break. He’ll probably hide in his room until the ceremony, anyway.”

Their suite is a deep, rich blue against a backdrop
